Onam is Malayali’s celebrated Harvest Festival, which marks the beginning of the Malay calendar. The festival is characterized by boat races, street parades with the participation of decorated elephants and musicians as well as traditional floral arrangements, Pookalam. In 2019, the ten-day festival started on the 15th of August and the main day of the celebration is the 25th of August.
Traditionally, the Pookalams were made in each house for 10 days, but now the Rangoli flower is made due to lack of time and space only on the first and last day of the festival. Fresh petals and leaves are used to make beautiful floral arrangements. Among the other activities organized in Onam are Pookalam competitions. Rangoli is one of the most popular traditional art forms in India. It is a kind of decorative motif, usually a floor art that uses different shapes of colors and flowers. Rangoli is considered very cheap because it is an inevitable part of Hindu festivals. In Kerala ‘Pookalam’ or the Rangoli flower marks the Onam festival.
“Poo” means “flower” and “Kalam” means art. The floral Rangoli or ‘Onam Kolam’ is a very important part of Onam’s celebrations. In the auspicious celebration of Onam, Malayalee families from all over the world decorate the entrance of their home with flowers and colors. The daily organization of a Pookalam on the ground is a ritual during the ten-day Oanm Festival. Every day different flowers and colors are used. Each day of Onam is dedicated to a particular flower. Beautiful designs are made with flowers and natural colors along with Cowdung. Traditionally, Rangoli dyes have been extracted from natural sources such as indigo, bark, vermillion, rice flour, turmeric, etc. The synthetic dyes of these days are being used more and have become very popular.
